A Fond Memory Shared
Seven GMs share their thoughts on the
league's 100 seasons
1. What is your fondest memory of the USA
Football League?
Losing the
Superbowl to Martin in overtime was almost
as great as winning my only one.
Pat Sicher, GM Houston Texans
It still has to be when you e-mailed
us to let us know the 3rd era of the
league would soon begin...
Todd Ricotta, GM Green Bay Packers
Winning my first Sundby Cup in 2027
after joining the league for the 2023
season. When I took the team over it was
quite bad (no winning season since 2010)
and I couldn't believe it when I had a
winner just 4 seasons later. The first is
always the best...
Lou Lombardo, GM Minnesota Vikings
Winning my first championship back in
2015. I entered the league in 2009 taking
over a last place team. At that time I
wasn't experienced at all with football
sims. I had to learn while i was building
a team, basically from nothing.
Jean Lefebvre, GM New England Patriots
Has to be my first season with the Dallas
Cowboys in 2005. I never even heard of the
game but through the coaxing of Mike
Morton in 2003 season I joined the USAFL
under Mike Breeden and the Cleveland
Browns as the AGM. From there I took a
1-13 2004 New Orleans Saints team to
Dallas and won the NFC West and NFC
Conference Championship in my first season
at the controls. We lost to Ben Breeden
and the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl
15-13.
Flip Sides, GM Dallas Cowboys
Gotta be winning the SB in 2026. That
whole post season was just one
unbelievable game after the other.
Did not think I would get past first
round.
Ed Pamer, GM Cleveland Browns
I would have to say my fondest memory
from all of my years associated with this
league is the string of 7 straight Super
Bowl appearances. Selfish, yes, but for me
- unforgettable. Granted, the Bills only
came out of that with 2 Sundby Cups, but
each consecutive year, my interest and
anxiety grew. It became a personal
challenge to return each year. A close
second would have to be when I met my
brother’s Packers in the 2049 Super Bowl.
Third would be my first Sundby Cup.
Mark Ricotta, GM Buffalo Bills
2. What
league rivalry have you enjoyed the most?
I think Tom vs
Mark has been great, but I like Ricotta's vs
anybody who disagrees with their trading
practices. Honorable mention to Ben vs the
Elements and his own brain farts.
Pat Sicher, GM Houston Texans
I have really enjoyed the Miami-Buffalo
rivalry the best - likely because it
resembles the real rivalry in the NFL.
Todd Ricotta, GM Green Bay Packers
I have really enjoyed my rivalry with
Mark's Buffalo squad. Even though we are in
different conferences, we always seem to
meet up in big games. For a rivalry not
involving my team, I've really enjoyed
watching Steve and Ben duke it out over the
years.
Lou Lombardo, GM Minnesota Vikings
I would say all USAFL vs Fred Hurtubise
:) Fred loves football and is a bit "cocky"
sometimes. Every NFC teams like beating the
Bucs or Card in NFC. I also like reading all
the discussions between Fred an other GMs
during draft night. There's one thing I've
been waiting for years now, an all French
Super Bowl between Fred and I !!
Jean Lefebvre, GM New England Patriots
I love whipping up on Fred and Ben! No
matter how many times Fred moves his team I
will always kick his Arce!
Flip Sides, GM Dallas Cowboys
I do remember hating Baltimore for a few
seasons.
Ed Pamer, GM Cleveland Browns
Wow. There have been so many great
rivalries. The unspoken divisional rivalry
with Tom’s Dolphins, the typical rivalry
with Ben’s (insert team here!), and the
championship rivalry with Andrew’s Eagles
and Lou’s Vikings (I hate those rivalries!).
But the one I’ve enjoyed the most has to be
with Steve’s Chiefs. Our teams have quite a
familiarity with one another in the
playoffs. Many, many games.
Mark Ricotta, GM Buffalo Bills
3. What is it
about the USAFL that keeps you coming back,
season after season?
The continuity
is the best thing about the league, you know
some guys leave and some guys come back, but
there is always the core group of guys that
make it fun. Oh, and the chance to make fun
of Fred.
Pat Sicher, GM Houston Texans
The fact that the season only lasts
3-weeks and has such an incredible
technological (applications and website)
foundation.
Todd Ricotta, GM Green Bay Packers
It's all about the quick turnaround.
It's always fresh, there's very little down
time, and you get to see the tangible
results of the decisions you make very
quickly.
Lou Lombardo, GM Minnesota Vikings
Besides loving the game, I guess it's a
combination having quality GMs in the league
and all the automated tools. We have a great
level of competitiveness in the league and
other GMs are always available to help
whenever needed. Also, all the previous
add-ons to the site helped many people (like
me !) to do their league duties even with a
very busy personal schedule.
Jean Lefebvre, GM New England Patriots
How can you walk away from something that
has been around for so long, with so many
great folks and lets not forget great
friends! I admit that there have been times
when I haven't had the drive to work hard on
my team. But I could never walk away from
the Dallas Cowboys, especially after all the
time I have spent learning how to win. I
feel like I finally part of the USAFL and
not on the outside looking in. Most of you
go so far back and never really had that
kind of history to contribute, but now after
63 seasons I think I can call myself one of
the family!
Flip Sides, GM Dallas Cowboys
The GMs. First and foremost. I have been
in a lot of leagues but none seemed to have
the dedication that this one does. Second
has got to be the ease of management. The
different programs that you have implemented
for the draft console, the waiver system,
and depth chart goes way above and beyond
and other league I have known.
Ed Pamer, GM Cleveland Browns
Tough question. I think the league has
endured for so many years because of the
level of integrity and the competitive but
friendly nature of each member. The way in
which the league keeps evolving and
improving is amazing. I enjoy the fact that
the USAFL gives me the closest opportunity I
will ever have at owning and running a
football team. This league is so realistic,
it’s addicting.
