USAFL Scheme Testing

PPP FAQ

The USAFL endeavored upon a rigorous testing methodology for the 6 offensive and 3 defensive schemes that was comprised of simming in excess of an estimated 5,000 games over a 2 month period. All testing involved various league sizes with team composition and league settings adhering to the following:

League Size: 30 Team League (Phase 1, 2 and 3 of Testing), 18 Team League (Final Phase of Testing)

Stadium: All Teams in Domes

League Settings: NO FATIGUE, NO INJURIES

Team Rosters: Every team roster was identical, with each position getting attributes of the average skill rating for each position during the 2006 season, the most recent season available when testing originally began. (i.e. QB1 gets the average SP rating for all 18 QB1's, QB1 gets the average AC rating for all 18 QB1's, etc.). Please see the following table for skill ratings for each player.

Team Alignment:  During the initial testing phases (1-3) there were 15 combinations of teams (5 OFFENSIVE SCHEMES, 3 DEFENSIVE SCHEMES) and each team was placed once in the AFC and once in the NFC.  Since each division has 5 teams, 3-4 Based DEF teams were placed in their own division along with the mix of 5 OFF schemes, etc. as follows:

AFC East: NFC East:
O-B-P D-34 O-B-P D-34
O-P-K D-34 O-P-K D-34
O-P-S D-34 O-P-S D-34

Team alignment for the FINAL phase of testing incorporated the West Coast Offense and was tested using an 18 Team League (18 combinations of TEAMS - 6 OFF x 3 DEF).

RESULTS:

Testing of the final set of game plans involved simming 2 14-game seasons and produced incredible similarity in performance and outcomes between schemes (see KEY STATISTICAL OUTCOMES for each Scheme below) and in comparison with aggregate data for the 2006 and 2007 USAFL Seasons, as evidenced in this Excel File.
