A QB Rivalry Going Back Years

Monte Owen reflects on his rivalry with Morgan Capper

Pre-Season 2102 (Albany, NY) - As preseason wraps up, Giants QB Monte Owen evaluates what his offense has done during the past few months.

'I see some improvement' Owen says. 'It'll be easy to improve on last year's offense, for sure.'

Monte Owen, who was the #4 draft pick coming out of Tennessee in the 2101 draft, had to sit through a brutal 1-12-1 campaign.

'Eh, I'm used to it, I've always been on teams that have been rebuilding. It dates back to high school for me.'

Owen's been seeing the headlines about Morgan Capper ever since the start of the 2101 season, and it's gotten to him a little bit.

'I get the teams that rebuild. Capper's always gotten the teams that have consistenly won themselves championships.'

Both Owen and Capper grew up 10 miles apart in Alabama. They both went to competing high schools, colleges, and now USAFL teams.

'Capper won two state championships and he only lost four games total as a four year starter in High School. Only one of my teams had a .500 record.' Owen said. Despite his high school team's lack of success, he got a scholarship offer from Tennesee.

'Tennessee was going through a transitional period.' Owen said. 'They saw what I did in High School and thought I could be a boost to the offense. I figured, hey, what the heck, and signed on. Of course, Capper over there, he got a scholarship offer from Florida, who at the time returned almost eighty percent of their national title team. Florida won a couple more titles with him as a starting quarterback while we only made one bowl game, which was during my senior year.'

Of course, both players came out in the same draft. Owen was rated highly by scouts and Capper was projected to be a late first rounder-early second rounder. Owen ended up falling to the Giants at #4, and Capper was drafted by Buffalo.

'Of course, Buffalo picked him up. They've had a strong organization for many years, I was not surprised at all they made him their starting quarterback.'

While Owen had a decent rookie campaign(which Owen admitted that he could do better), Capper broke rookie records and won the Rookie of the Year.

'At least so far in my football career I can say I was drafted higher than Capper.' Owen said 'He's been blessed with the best possible personnel at every level. Of course the media will fawn all over him. He's taken advantage of it and played well enough to have a solid pro career.'

Owen and Capper didn't face off in 20101, and are not scheduled for the 2102 season. Owen, however, hopes to face off against Capper soon on the greatest stage of them all.

'I'm 0-7 against Capper so far in my life, but hey, I think when it comes down to it, and we meet for a Sundby Cup, I'll notch a win.'
