(Chicago, IL.) - When GM Z-Bo Zabroski became the head of the front office in Chicago, he vowed he would build the greatest 4-6 defense in league history. Whether the Bears' defense has come that far is debatable. Yet, the numbers do not lie: The Bears defense will go down as one of the most scariest in history. The Monsters of the Midway are back.
485 rushing yards allowed. A modern record, besting the record they set last year, and good for 10th all-time.
Two linebackers with over 20 sacks. The first time in league history team mates at linebacker eclipsed 20 sacks each. Gary Anderson finished #2 in the league with 22 sacks. Shawn Williams finished #3 in the league with 21 sacks.
108 sacks as a defensive unit for 618 yards lost.
Eight defenders had at least 7 sacks.
Only 29 rushing first downs allowed. A modern era record, previously set by the 2015 Buffalo squad (32).
And they did it while BRINGING THE NASTY: 83 penalties for 573 yards, 45 of which resulted in first downs allowed. Chicago only allowed 200 first downs total. In other words, 25% of the first downs allowed were because a Chicago defender broke the rules.
The highlight of the season had to be defensive captain Claiborn Turner, the longest tenured defender on the team. Turner had 2 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, 69 tackles and 9 sacks. Turner's season was one of the best performances by a safety in a long time.
