Bowling Ball With A Butcher's Knife

Roger Koffard Continues to Bulldozer
By "Otis Tackleberry"

Playoffs 2107 (Chicago, IL.) - When the Chicago Bears inked Roger Koffard to an unthinkable 5 year, 75 million dollar contract, many wondered if the career starting fullback was worth the money. Many questioned if Roger Koffard had the tenacity to carry the ball thirty times per game. Everyone knew Koffard was famous for bone-crunching blocks that led to three Sundby Cup rings. Everyone knew Koffard could open up a hole a mile wide for a running back to run through. But, many wondered, could Roger Koffard squeak through a crack in the defensive line and find enough daylight to get a touchdown on the goal line?

In his first season with the Chicago Bears, Koffard answered almost all the questions. He bulldozed and cut through defenses like a bowling ball with a butcher's knife. Koffard led the league in rushing, ahead of his former teammate Sammy Ray. The regular season headlines suggested Koffard was worth every cent. Yet, versus the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the 2106 playoffs, Koffard only touched the ball 15 times for 39 yards leaving some to question whether he could step up in the big games.

So far in the 2107 Playoffs, Koffard has used such bulletin board material as a personal motivator.

In the fourth quarter versus the Panthers, when the Bears needed him most, Koffard was the one man wrecking crew, beating up a tired Panthers front 7 and taking every fourth quarter carry into the third level of the defense. He carried the ball 31 times for 186 yards while scoring both Bears' touchdowns. He also had one reception for 30 yards.

The Giants tried to contain Koffard with their 3-4 bend-but-don't-break defense. The former Buffalo Bills star responded like a wild bull in a rodeo, bucking the Giants' arm tackles and punching through the Giants' containment defense like it were a wet paper bag. When the Bears needed Koffard the most, he delivered: 21 carries for 148 yards, a whopping 7.0 yards per carry. He added 2 catches for 33 yards.

So far, Koffard is averaging 7.2 yards per touch in the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs 4-6 defense will be a real test for Koffard, as the Chiefs have built their defense to stop such superior running backs. In round 1, the Chiefs stonewalled Dan 'GodBack' Cobb. It will make for a great match-up and an intense Sundby Cup.
