Romine expected to start in Houston.

Rookie impresses in workouts

Pre-Season 2109 (Houston, TX) - When Houston Texans GM Patrick Sicher received a call from Todd Ricotta a week before the draft, he automatically expected to hear the Packers head honcho offer him a 4th rounder for Darrin Langfield, only to then sweeten the pot by saying he would add a 3rd if he added Ray Nunn. Much to his amazement, Sicher was approached with a very reasonable offer for the 1st overall pick.

“When we sat down and put together our big board, Merv Romine was at the top of the list without much objection. At 6 we knew we had no chance of landing him and were going to inquire about the availability of the 1st overall pick. Then I check my voicemail and the deal was right there. We jumped on it without hesitation.”

The deal to move up involved dealing a future third round pick and young wide receiver Tom Kramer. “Losing T.K. wasn’t pleasant, but when you can get a game changer like Romine you have to do some things you don’t always like.”

When asked if Romine would be a starter as a rookie, Sicher was very coy. “How else do you expect him to break the all time rushing marks? When you draft a guy #1 overall at a skill position, it better be to start him right away.

In other preseason news, DL Ray Nunn, former #4 overall pick, has impressed team officials with his combination of size and speed. It would not be a surprise to see him ink a franchise player contract in the next couple of days.
