Lewis faces end of the line

Bengals veteran likely to be third stringer when season starts

Off-Season 2188 (Cincinnati) - Cincinnati Bengals legendary QB Scott Lewis can't believe it has come down to this.

'I can't believe no one in the league wanted me,' Lewis told reporters. 'Talk about a blow to your ego.'

The Bengals front office tried to accommodate the legend when he asked for a trade with young vet Steve Callahan primed to take the starting job. When rookie Keith Query was drafted in the second round, Lewis knew for sure the organization was moving on.

'It's nothing personal, I know,' Lewis said. 'It's a business and these old knees aren't what they used to be. But it's hard to face the end of your career.'

It is indeed hard to believe that the man who has thrown for 33,900 yards and 199 TDs in his career wasn't wanted by anyone else in the USAFL, including his own team.

'These things are always hard on everyone,' Bengals GM 'Trader' Lee Remley said. 'Scotty gave us lots of good years here. But at some point you have to move on. That's not just football, that's life.'

Lewis has one big regret.

'We never won the big one,' he laments. 'We were so close, especially last year. But we just didn't get it done. Hopefully we can do it this year.'

Will Scott Lewis be like a quarterback coach without the title this season?

'I'll help out Steve any way I can,' Lewis replies. 'Always have.'

Remley talks as if that job description might be a possibility after Lewis officially retires as well.

'Scotty has a job whenever he's ready for it,' Remley said.

The question is whether Lewis will be ready for it.
