Talks With Sexton Breakdown

Decorated LB to Retire

Playoffs 2211 (San Diego) - All-world LB Greg Sexton, currently a holdout from the San Diego Chargers, tweeted this morning that he will not be returning in 2212 for a 15th and final season after learning that the Chargers have decided to not restructure the LB's contract for 12.000.

Greg Sexton @sexygreg2198
thanks Chargers fans...it's been a blast. see you in Miami on super Sunday. #gobolts

Sexton attempted to return to the starting lineup for a 14th season following offseason surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle he suffered in training camp, but was displaced by LB Maurice Hibett, a player acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shortly after Sexton's injury.

Sexton gradually worked his way back in to playing shape, but mainly played in mop up duty in the 2211 season...registering just 18 tackles, 0 sacks and 0 forced turnovers for the 13-1 Chargers.

Immediately following the season, Sexton filed his papers with the league officially beginning his holdout.

The franchise LB entered the league as the #1 overall pick in the 2198 draft and quickly made an impression on his coaches and teammates.

From day 1 Sexton was the unquestioned leader of the Chargers defense, leading a 2198 group that 'featured' 5 rookie starters, including 4 rookie starters at LB in the Chargers' 3-4 defense.

The Chargers went 1-13 that season, but had a core nucleus that would lead the team to an 8-6 record just 2 seasons later, and a streak of 7 consecutive division crowns and 2 Sundby Cup wins in 2205 and 2206; both wins coming against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In an interview for Page 2 on USAFL.NET, GM Todd Ricotta reflected on some of the greats that have played for the franchise over the years.

Ricotta's choice at LB at the time? LB Brett Kane, who suited up for the team between 2126 and 2139 when they played in Chicago as the Bears.

Kane's bio:
* Drafted #13 overall in the 2126 draft
* Finished career with over 1,000 tackles, 146 sacks, 37 forced turnovers (27 fumble recoveries and 10 INTs)

Sexton's bio:
* Drafted #1 overall in the 2198 draft
* Finished career with 1,147 tackles, 158 sacks, 34 forced turnovers (13 fumble recoveries and 21 INTs)

Both players had comparable stats, but there is one substantial difference between the two...championships. Sexton has multiple rings to his credit, while Kane made it to the Sundby Cup in his rookie season as a back-up LB, losing to the New England Patriots 40-16. Kane never returned to the big game.

Both Kane and Sexton will be long remembered by their fans...but something tells me that if Ricotta had the interview to do over again, Sexton would be his choice this time around.
