Shawn Steps Up

USAFL MVP Responds to Critics
By "Tony Clifton"

Off-Season 2238 (Miami) - It appears that the Sports Writer's Association has stirred up a hornet's nest again, and the league's newest MVP is not backing away. 'Of course I deserve the MVP,' commented Shawn O'Donoghue, 'Do you even watch football?!?' The Miami quarterback, who last week beat out Cincinnati slinger Kenny Smith for the SWA's annual award, was responding to comments from the Bengals camp that Smith was more deserving of the prestigious honor. 'I mean, c'mon man! Kenny was only even on four ballots! Besides, this is just the start. You might as well just write me in again this year, too. What I want to know is why didn't Mr. Piper win the GMOY? And I'm sure we've got a rookie around here somewhere that should have won that one, too!'

Miami General Manager Mike Piper was cautious not to get caught up in a war of words with a division rival. 'Kenny is a great player,' said Piper. 'So is Shawn. They're all great.' Piper, who also holds a voting seat with the SWA, finally showed a bit of fire when asked if he was responsible for his lone first place vote in the GM of the Year voting. 'I didn't even put myself in the top three,' he said. 'Lee got my vote, and he deserved it. No surprise that his team is on such a roll. That guy knows football.' When asked if he voted for his own quarterback for MVP, however, Piper just smiled and said 'No comment.'
