USAFL Tie-Breakers

TIEBREAKER RULES
The following procedures will be used to break standings ties for playoffs, draft order, and to determine regular-season schedules.
Note: Tie games count as a half win and half loss for both teams.

As of the 2340 USAFL season, we have updated our Tiebreaker Rules to fit the new 12-team league structure

To break a tie within a division

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more teams in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Teams
1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the two teams)
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division
3. Strength of victory (win total by opponents defeated)
4. Strength of schedule (combined record of all opponents)
5. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed
6. Best net points in all games
7. Best net touchdowns in all games
8. Coin flip

Three or More Teams
(Note: If two teams remain tied after third or other teams are eliminated during any step, tie breaker rules revert to step 1 of the two-team format)
1. Head-to-head record (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the teams)
8. Coin flip

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD CARD OR PLAYOFF SEEDING
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the Wild-Card team, the following steps will be taken.
1. If any tied teams are from the same division, apply division tie breaker above first
2. If the tied teams are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Teams
1. Head-to-head result
2. Strength of victory (win total by opponents defeated)
3. Strength of schedule (combined record of all opponents)
4. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed
5. Best net points in all games
6. Best net touchdowns in all games
7. Coin flip

Three or More Teams
(Note: If two teams remain tied after the third or other teams are eliminated, tie breaker rules revert to step 1 of the two-team format)
1. Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked team in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the Wild-Card participant and Playoff Seeding.
2. Head-to-head record (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the teams)
3. Strength of victory (win total by opponents defeated)
4. Strength of schedule (combined record of all opponents)
5. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed
6. Best net points in all games
7. Best net touchdowns in all games
8. Coin flip

NOTE
Only one team advances to the playoffs in any tie-breaking step. Remaining tied teams revert to the first step of the applicable Division or Wild Card tie breakers.

TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURE FOR DRAFT NIGHT
If two or more teams are tied in the selection order, the strength of schedule tie breaker is applied, subject to the following exceptions for playoff teams:

1. The Sundby Cup winner is last and the Sundby Cup loser is next-to-last.
2. Any playoff team involved in a tie shall be assigned priority below that of all non-playoff teams and in the order that the playoff teams exited from the playoffs. Thus, a playoff team that loses in the first round will have priority over a the teams in the Sundby Cup game. If two tied teams exit the playoffs in the same round, the tie is broken by strength of schedule.

In using strength of schedule for breaking ties relating to draft order, the team with the lower overall win percentage by their opponents wins the tiebreaker.

If any ties cannot be broken by strength of schedule, the following steps will apply:

1. Head-to-head record (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the teams)
2. Strength of victory (win total by opponents defeated)
3. Coin flip
