(Cincinnati) - The Cincinnati Bengals said goodbye to a couple of their all-time greats today as QB Danny Cavanaugh and WR Bill Cooper decided to hang them up together.
Cavanaugh retires as the fourth best QB in franchise history despite his first four years in Atlanta, behind such greats as the all-time leader Kevin Jones, Scott Dorn, and Courtney McLemore. Great company, indeed. He threw for 39,213 yards as a Bengals with 256 TDs in his career here.
Bill Cooper already established himself as the Bengals all-time leader in every receiver category prior to this season, adding to his totals of pulling down 1210 passes, 14,322 yards and 117 TDs.
The combination of Cavanaugh and Cooper, from which most of these statistics were accumulated, will stay in Bengals fans memories for quite some time.
Bengals GM 'Trader' Lee Remley was rather somber at the retirement announcement.
'These two guys will be hard to replace,' he said. 'We will most likely not see that kind of production from a passing duo again.'
The Bengals QB situation is a bit up in the air with last year's first round pick Randy Johnson not coming along as the team had hoped. But he is the only guy in the room at the moment.
As far as receivers, though, Mackenzie Mills is expected to take over as the #1 WR and has great skills, though not nearly as big as receiver as Cooper was.
This offseason will be a crucial one as the franchise hopes to capitalize on an unexpected 8-6 season and a playoff berth.
