Giants Concern About DL Development At Critical Levels

Giants looking for next big thing on the defensive line, but failing miserably
By "John Johnson"

Playoffs 2104 (Albany, NY) - Giants General Manager Joe Malloy declared what he has termed the equivalent to a 'State of Emergency' as it relates to how the Giants have drafted and developed defensive linemen since the retirement of Bob Walters.

'Walters was probably our best defensive lineman of the last 50 years, and it has been impossible to find a replacement.' Malloy said.

'It's a bit of poor drafting on our part. Poor drafting, scouting, and development of our young defensive linemen over the last decade or so pretty much indicates a State of Emergency as far as that goes. Everywhere else has been great, but in order to get to the next level, we really need to come across some great defensive linemen.'

Toby Vanderbeek, who was the highest profile defensive lineman draft pick for the Giants, has been a huge disappointment ever since he won Rookie of the Year two seasons back. Malcolm Bates, who was a former top pick, has barely gotten into games. Many other Giants defensive linemen have been traded or released due to not developing properly.

Walters, who was named in charge of player development last season, re-iterated his call for change.

'I really think overhauling the defensive line might be the best way to go about things. Look, we're not looking for the next Coleman Sites. There will never be another defensive lineman like him. He's the greatest defensive lineman in the last 100 years for sure, and we're rooting for him to break the all time sack record. But enough of that tangent, for now. We're looking for guys that can come in and put a scare into opposing offenses. We don't have the guys up front to do that. I don't know what is going on with our scouting and development, but me and Malloy have vowed some massive changes to put together a decent defensive line.'

Current members of the Giants defensive line could not be reached for comment, but many believe the project, nicknamed the Great Bloodletting of '05, could bring about some massive and positive changes to the Giants in the next few years.
