Giants Begin Defensive Housecleaning

Malloy cites humiliating loss in the playoffs as the reason

Off-Season 2114 (Albany, NY) - There was hope as the Giants went into their playoff matchup against the Carolina Panthers. The Giants had the second ranked defense in the league, and looked confident heading into the game.

'I don't know what happened, but suddenly there were a whole lot of players out on the field that no longer fit in with our defensive scheme, so we got humbled.' Giants general manager Joe Malloy said in a press conference announcing the hiring of Mason Stein as the new Giants defensive coordinator. Stein is expected to retain the 4-3 defense the Giants have had for years.

'I sat down with Mason and decided that we probably should start fresh. We had a lot of capable players on defense in the 2113 season, but suddenly they couldn't handle the Panthers offense. It was humiliating to see a bunch of professionals getting carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey.'

The Giants have already begun a defensive housecleaning, trading Mike Bell to the Green Bay Packers for a future first round draft pick. 'Bell didn't fit in with my future plans. Sure, he had 84 tackles and 12 sacks last season, but we felt that he just never adjusted to playing in New York. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.'

Instead of being putting longtime linebacker John Farlow on the trade block, Malloy brought in Farlow, and he announced his retirement at the same press conference.

'It's time to move on from the USAFL, and the Giants are looking to move forward in a new direction. I feel disappointed that my career came to a close without a championship, but I hope I can still contribute to the team in any way possible. Joe's given me a chance to come aboard the coaching staff as a strength coach, and I plan on taking advantage of this opportunity.'

Malloy said to expect more moves in the future. Longtime safety Johnny Gordon is expected to be traded before the draft, and more players are expected to be finding new homes soon. Giants defensive end LeRoy Petersen is eligible for free agency and the Giants are not expected to offer a contract if another team bids on him.

'Like Johnny said, we definitely need to move in a new direction, and the Panthers game proved that. Hopefully it won't take us too long to get adjusted and playing at a top level.'

While the defense is set to undergo some major changes, the offense is expected to mainly go untouched. Malloy announced the offense is going to a West Coast style of play, but the players on the offensive side of the ball are going nowhere. 'We're fine on offense. We got some good young players mixed in with our veterans, so I don't see the need to make many changes there.'
