Playoffs 2116 (Washington, D.C.) - When Baltimore travelled to Washington for their final game of the season, kicker Russ Hoge was one away from tying the record for most fields goals in any era of the USAFL.

'It was really exciting. I've been getting so many opportunities and striking the ball so well, that I felt very confident that I'd get my chance,' stated a jubilant Hoge.

The fourth-year kicker, acquired in an afterthought trade when it was rumored Green Bay would cut him, has had a remarkable run of success this season. It's probably a good thing, too, as his two misses in last year's AFC Championship game were decisive.

'You always want a shot at redemption,' explained Hoge. 'The team really rallied around me after last year, and I'm not going to let them down again. I've just been fortunate to get plenty of opportunities.'

'Well, that's one way to put it,' interrupted GM Mark Thul. 'Another way to put it is that we need to get the ball in the endzone more consistently.'

So when the fourth quarter of the season finale rolled around, it was a bit of a shock that Hoge had yet to be called on. With eight and a half minutes remaining and the Ravens up 35-19, Hoge got the call to try and match the record. His 37 yarder sailed true, right down the center.

Six minutes later, the team stalled in the redzone once again. Now Hoge had a chance to be the sole record holder.

'The snap was clean, but it slipped in my hands a little,' explained holder Greg Carter. 'I got it down just a touch late and with the laces the wrong way. Fortunately Hodgy got enough of it.'

The 31 yarder nearly hooked outside the left upright but managed to hold on just long enough. Hoge had his record.

'I'm happy for him,' added team leader Mark Moxley. 'He's put in the time and effort, and he deserves the credit.'
