OL Carpenter, LB Jay - Franchise Players

2135 #6 & #7 Picks Locked in For Life
By "Gary Gray"

Off-Season 2138 (Washington, DC) - The Washington Redskins announced today that offensive lineman Andrew Carpenter and linebacker Alvin Jay have both signed Franchise Player contracts. They will receive $8m each for the remainder of their careers.

The organization was forced to trade away a fan-favorite, tackle Johnnie Barker. 'We needed the FP slot, and so we made it happen,' explained GM Ben Breeden. 'Hate to see him [Barker] go; he was one of my favorites. We were able to secure an almost-equivalent replacement in Rich Webster and a first round pick to boot. I think it's a good deal for the long run.

'We just couldn't allow Alvin and Andrew hit the free agent market. These guys are incredible. We really expect each of them to be top 3 players. In fact, Alvin is starting to look like one of the best linebackers to ever play the game. We run a 3-4, but if we ever switch to a 4-3, we are definitely going to call our linebacker squad Alvin and the Chipmunks. Personally, I think he will be better than Kyle Haines in his prime - the undisputed #1 linebacker in the league.'

This reporter must note, however, that on draft day, the Redskins had planned to announce THREE franchise players on one team from a single draft - potentially a first in the history of this great league. In his third year, defensive lineman John Coleman, selected #1 overall in 2135, has yet break into the starting lineup. Asked for comment, Breeden said, 'I have a feeling that he will get some money in free agency. Unfortunately, Coleman isn't quite what we had hoped for. He's got a role on this team. But he's not quite on the franchise player level.'
