Fearsome Foursome

Carolina acquires two big time defensive linemen to add to talent

Off-Season 2142 (Charlotte) - With the acquisition of defensive ends Brian Williams and John Stone from the Sundby Cup champion Washington Redskins, the Carolina Panthers now feel they have a fearsome foursome that will terrorize opposing quarterbacks in the upcoming season.

“Whew,” Panthers GM “Trader” Lee Remley said, wiping his brow. “Quite a coup to add these two guys to our mix. I am really looking forward to the season to see how the line produces.”

While many may think the Panthers giving up of two first round picks and veteran defensive end Darryl Givens was a high price to pay, Remley thinks it was a good gamble to finally put his team over the top in the tough NFC.

“The teams that get to the big game in our league do it on defense,” Remley said. “Our front seven is now very good, and that will improve the defense significantly.”

Of course, defensive tackles Mitchell Markham and Kent James were acquired last offseason and put up 10+ sacks, just as these two did for the Skins. So the new line has a potential for a lot of sacks this season between the four.

In addition to the four starters on the defensive line, former starters Aaron Edwards and Lyle Davenport are around to lend support in backup roles, giving them a couple more talented defensive linemen to rotate in when needed.

But the two talented linemen from Washington weren’t the only additions on defense.

Linebacker Tony Archer was signed as a free agent from the Chicago Bears, giving Carolina three speedy, talented linebackers. In fact, the linebacking crew is pretty deep right now.

“We are well set there going into the future,” Remley said. “And Archer is really going to help us.”
