No Carolina dreamin?

Remley very candid about reasons for beginning of rebuilding process

Off-Season 2145 (Charlotte) - After the trade of a few key players in the Carolina Panthers offense, Panthers fans resigned themselves to the fact that the oft-postponed rebuilding process may have begun.

When questioned on his team's offseason moves, Carolina Panthers GM 'Trader' Lee Remley was very candid about the reasons why he began the process.

'Basically you have a league mandated dynasty in Washington for a few seasons now,' Remley told reporters at his weekly press conference. 'Even if our window has not yet closed, by the time that process is resolved, it will be. So it makes no sense to keep beating our head against the wall and delay it even further.'

The Panthers have made nine straight post-season appearances, but Remley spoke as if he were not expecting to go far even if there were a tenth.

'We have 11 rookies on the roster, and we have a new quarterback on top of that,' Remley said. 'Who knows what to expect this season, especially with Washington again intact and even adding more talent through the draft.'

Many other GMs, especially in the NFC, have expressed similar sentiments. At the very least, many wonder why the Washington GM job, a very lucrative job, has gone unfilled for so long.

Everyone seems to agree, however, that a rule which was instituted to prevent down and out teams without a GM from having their star players fleeced in the past is working against many active GMs efforts in this case.

As for the Panthers, they are making the best of the situation.

'We are working within the league rules as they stand,' Remley answered when pushed on this issue. 'I can complain about bad offensive linemen drafts the last several years too, but there's nothing I can do about that either.'

So as training camp dawns, Carolina fans are cautiously optimistic, and like many teams' fans in the league, wondering about what might have been.
