82 year old head coach Kevin Jones still going strong

Octogenarian says commish still calls him Fred

Off-Season 2155 (Charlotte) - He may not have the same zip in his throwing arm he did after the 2110 season when he retired with 53,575 passing yards and 327 TDs, cementing his place among the USAFL greats, but 82 year old Panthers head coach Kevin Jones is still going strong.

'And to this day, the commissioner still calls me Fred,' Jones said, followed by his trademark cackle and a fit of coughing. 'But hey, I'm still here and older than dirt, so I don't care.'

Jones is glad that the Panthers are returning to the West Coast offense he ran to perfection during the 2100s when the Panthers won their first Sundby. He still recalls those days fondly.

'We were a solid team,' Jones said between yelling at the offense, bringing back memories of him behind center calling audibles. 'I don't think we'll see the likes of that kind of run again in these parts. Things change too fast in this league any more.'

Jones has been the quarterbacks coach, then offensive coordinator, and then head coach for his old team since he retired in 2110. He played in Charlotte his whole career and has stayed with the team since.

'Charlotte is a great city and I love the people here,' Jones tells people when they ask why he stuck around. 'The organization has treated me great all these years, so I am glad to give something back and teach these kids something.'

The current Panthers hope to take the next step to get back there where Jones once was as a player as they welcome eight rookies to minicamp taken in the recent draft.

'Always great to have new blood,' Jones says as he limps back to the practice field.

Time to get back to work.
