Veteran Bengals running back released in final cuts.

Off-Season 2171 (Cincinnati) - The Cincinnati Bengals today cut ties with their all time rushing leader as veteran running back Mike Cummings was released in the teams final eight cuts.

Observers had thought as much after the Bengals picked up Tampa Bay veteran Todd Hampton. Their suspicions were confirmed this morning.

'We wish Mike well,' Bengals GM 'Trader' Lee Remley said at the team's weekly press conference. 'But we couldn't justify his 4 million dollar salary as a backup fullback. It was just time for both the team and Mike to move on.'

Cummings finishes his career with 14,783 rushing yards and 85 TDs, making him by far the new Bengals rushing leader. He also had 274 catches for 2,939 yards and 14 TDs catching passes out of the backfield.

The running back hopes to catch on with another team, but since he was shopped around the league by the Bengals prior to his release, he finds that doubtful.

Either way, Cummings plans on this being his last season.

'My legs aren't what they used to be,' Cummings said honestly. 'I know I used to be one of the fastest guys in the league. But I can still help somebody if they're willing to take a chance on me.'

We wish him well in that endeavor.
