The Best of All Time

QB John Belk has the numbers and the rings to make his case
By "Cole Winter"

Playoffs 2176 (Minneapolis, MN) - At the press conference after a heart-wrenching 28-21 loss in New York to lose out a 13th straight NFC West title, John Belk sat and announced that, yes, this would be his final season in the USAFL. This was a season, Belk's 16th in the league, which saw the Vikings' signal caller become the most decorated passer in the history of the league.

The numbers are staggering - 57,137 yards, 411 TD passes, 88.1 career passer rating, 171 regular season wins, and six (or potentially seven) Sundby Cup titles. The final regular season game against the Giants was bittersweet for Belk as it saw him become the all-time leader in passing yards (he finished 75 yards ahead of Green Bay legend Virgil Chun) but also saw the Vikes squander a 14-0 first quarter lead in a game which would have given Minnesota another division crown. Belk stood helplessly on the sideline as he watched young superstar Bruce Givens march the Giants down the field in the last minute to win the game and setup a first round rematch of these two teams in New York next week.

As for Belk, he will go down as the best quarteback of his generation and maybe one of the best of all-time. Some of the numbers are unimagineable, like the career TD record that he shattered two seasons ago and has continued to pad. But for Belk, the number he is most proud of is the number of rings he carries. 'When it is all said and done the only thing that matters on that field is that we win. I think we've done a pretty good job of that over the years.'
