Bengals shore up defense

Acquisition of Kinser and Gaffney

Off-Season 2197 (Cincinnati) - The Cincinnati Bengals pulled the trigger on a couple of trades early in the offseason to shore up the defense on a team that was competitive yet missed the playoffs last season.

After switching to a 3-4 defense, one of the biggest needs was a nose tackle that could dominate the center of a defense. Enter old friend Cornell Kinser, who they re-acquired from Tampa Bay to fill that role.

Next was a need for another linebacker. The acquisition of Tim Gaffney from San Diego was not seen as necessary by some, but adds a big talent to an already talented unit that should dominate the opposition.

'We felt our defense needed to get better,' Bengals GM 'Trader' Lee Remley said. 'We're right on the edge of being an AFC power again and these players will help us next year.'

The Bengals now look to upgrade a wide receiver corps that has thinned out in recent years, espeically of sure handed receivers.

'We continue to look at ways to improve this club,' Remley pointed out. 'Anywhere.'
