Is Buffalo Bungling a Blue-chip Roster?

Management of the QB position has been curious

Regular Season 2211 (Orchard Park, NY) - The Buffalo Bills are an enigma. Wrapped in a mystery. Wrapped in a poorly handled QB situation. A team that was built to win, that has made the playoffs each of the last 5 years and appeared in 3 of the last 4 Sundby Cups, cannot seal the deal. Can somebody please tell GM Mark Ricotta that QB is the most important position on a USAFL team? For a team with such a rich quarterback history (think Sonny Vail, Cedric Ebert, Morgan Capper, Eugene Aldridge and others), how is it possible that they’ve handed the reins to Chris Roden? (And after the three hour tour that was Joe Varnell…..) Sure his first two seasons as the starter have produced Sundby Cup appearances, but he cannot get this team over the hump.

Really, the rest of the roster is well put together. On the offensive side of the ball, the O-line has consistently graded out as one of the league’s best, and the receiving corps has an impressive combination of quickness and hands. On the meaner side of the ball, the defensive backfield can suffocate the opponents passing game, allowing the front seven to maximize their abilities. But look at the offensive numbers. Something doesn’t add up. I’ll give you three guesses what the problem is, and two of them don’t count. And it starts with the letter Q and ends with the letter B. I wonder if Ricotta can figure that one out?

Roden needs to protect the ball better than he has. His fumbles and interceptions come at devastating times. The Bills are positioned for their 3rd straight AFC East title and are on a collision course with the San Diego Chargers juggernaut, but to what end? Ricotta better hope his trust in Ryan Fitzpatrick-ish QB’s finally pays off. (Psst....it won’t)
