Scott Gary retires

Bengals rusher takes his place among the all-time greats

Off-Season 2242 (Cincinnati) - As the curtain drew close on Cincinnati's forgettable 1-12-1 season, lost among all the transactions in the USAFL was the announcement of a lone retirement from the Bengals, that of RB Scott Gary.

Relegated to a backup role this season, Gary only showed up on kick returns as the up man to a rookie kick returner. With the emergence of Woody Griffith as the main man this season, Gary knew it was time to call it a career, but instead of the fanfare of a last tour around the league, he went out quietly like a pro.

Scott Gary retires as the third leading rusher in Bengals history with 13,599 yards, a history which was home to a lot of stud running backs over the years. He also finished second all time in TDs scored with 111. The leader in both categories? None other than the immortal Darryl Dixon, who retired in 2240 with 16,751 yards and 145 TDs, standards that may never be reached again on this team.

No one will forget the day that veteran Bengals defensive end Darren Shannon intended to welcome Gary to the USAFL. Gary merely leaped over his diving tackle attempt and went for the score. The next play, Scott zipped around left end around the veteran for another score. Finally, Shannon tried to square up on Gary and deliver a good lick. Instead, Scott lowered the shoulder and dragged him and a few other defenders a few yards, moving the pile a good number of yards past the first down marker before they finally overwhelmed him. He had the respect of his teammates ever since.

Both the USAFL and Bengals fans will miss the hard nosed runner they called Scotty as he rides off into the sunset.
