Bengals give big bucks to big uglies

Cincinnati gives free agent deals to linemen on both sides of line

Off-Season 2256 (Cincinnati ) - Bengals GM 'Trader' Lee Remley has called them 'big uglies' since his days as an immobile strong armed quarterback. He also knows their value to his team.

So it was no surprise he matched the free agent offers that the Oakland Raiders made to T Maxwell Thomas and DE Johnny Walker. The national media pointed out that the Bengals had the depth to withstand those losses, but Remley never let sportswriters run his team.

'Legendary coach Herm Edwards had a saying, 'Don't mess with the cha cha',' Remley said. 'So we didn't.'

Some would say the Bengals did that already by trading two great linebackers to arch-rival Miami, but Remley dismissed those critics too.

'We had great young linebackers to plug in those spots,' Remley said. 'I know, they say I haven't met a linebacker I didn't like. We've had some great ones over the years.'

The Bengals hope to fight off Miami for the division title once again this season. With the overhaul in Florida, fans are hoping they will have a great chance of doing that and returning to the Sundby Cup.

After all, Herm said 'you play to win the game' as well.
