Playoffs 2278 (Charlotte) - The Carolina Panthers held a press conference this morning to announce that QB Pat McCullough intends to retire after the playoffs, concluding a brilliant career, all spent with this franchise.

McCullough will go down as the fifth best passer in franchise history with 35,830 yards and a solid 89.1 lifetime passer rating.

Not known for his mobility, but possessing a strong arm and a keen intellect, the former Notre Dame star was signed as an undrafted free agent by GM 'Trader' Lee Remley because he 'Just liked something he saw in him.' Now, years later, McCullough goes down as one of the franchise's best.

McCullough didn't promise a championship in his last hurrah, but he is looking forward to getting his team to the promised land, nonetheless.

'We have the team to go all the way again,' McCullough said at his press conference. 'We just need to go out and prove it on the field. We should have a lot more trophies than we have, but we just didn't get the job done at crunch time.'

It sounds like the team's quarterback is challenging his troops to make good on their promise this time.

In related news, HB James White is now the team's all-time leader in rushing and all purpose yards, surpassing the great Darryl Dixon. The good news is that White is far from done in his brilliant career, having led the league in rushing once again this past season, and should spend a few more seasons in a Panthers uniform. But he will miss his old friend Pat.

'It's going to be weird next season without him telling dirty jokes in the huddle,' White laughed. 'The one about the guy high stepping toward the end zone and then falling in the mud at the five yard line is especially hilarious.'
