Walls breaking through barriers at training camp

Panthers rookie QB may start from day one
By "Aki Kurikawa"

Off-Season 2315 (Charlotte) - Carolina Panthers rookie QB Mark Walls is opening eyes in training camp as he zips the ball around the field. His coach, Scott Dorn, a legendary Panthers QB himself, says he reminds him of someone familiar.

'He reminds me of me,' Dorn said with a smile when asked about his new recruit, taken 10th overall in the draft and the consensus top QB in the draft. 'I'm afraid he's going to break all my records!'

With a franchise with so many well known signal callers, From Kevin Jones to Scott Dorn to Griffin Hinnant to Courtney McLemore among others, that's quite a statement. The irascible old man Kevin Jones has been around camp too, and likes what he sees.

'That young fella's got somethin',' Jones said in his South Carolina drawl. 'But he ain't no Kevin Jones,' he added with a grin. 'No one is. I'm one of a kind.'

It remains to be seen whether Walls has what it takes to knock incumbent Leo Jenkins out of a job in what many feel will be his final season, but the possibility exists. As for Jenkins, generous with his time for the young man despite the talk of him taking his job, he has not conceded anything.

'I still got some talent in me,' Jenkins told reporters when asked about what he calls, 'a little competition.' 'A little competition never hurt anybody, and keeps an veteran sharp.'

Whoever leads this team, they are all in on a Sundby Cup. Any talk of a rebuild here gets blood boiling.

'We are going to win this thing with a rookie QB,' Walls says, before firing a ball 50 yards downfield.
