Experts think Smelt trade a little fishy

Some question adding to a solid defensive line

Off-Season 2102 (Charlotte) - Armchair quarterbacks were filling the sports talk shows with a lot of questions on the Panthers acquisition of DL Steve Smelt from the Houston Texans for future 3rd and 4th round picks this offseason.

'I've heard all the gripes,' Carolina GM 'Trader' Lee Remley said during his weekly press conference. 'The fact is we're getting long in the tooth on the defensive line, so I thought it was a prudent move.'

'Some seem to forget that linemen on both sides of the ball are coveted in this league,' Remley continued. 'When you can get a known quantity versus a unknown, you need to go for it.'

Remley also hinted that big changes to the roster may be in the offing soon if there is not marked improvement this season.

'Fact is, this group has to produce.' the GM stated. 'We have a good mix of young and old here so this is the time. The fans better hold on to their hats, because if this thing doesn't get better this year, there will be a whole lot of changes next offseason.'
