Quarterback Controversy in New York

Both Haugen and Owen demand trades

Off-Season 2109 (Albany, NY) - With the Giants drafting of quarterback Dan Marsh out of Colorado State University in the 2109 USAFL Rookie Draft, it has caused a quarterback controversy as the New York Giants do not like carrying more than two quarterbacks on their roster.

Both Thatch Haugen, who was a waiver wire signing in 2108, and Monte Owen, who has started every game in his career for the Giants, demanded a trade, knowing that there's no room for three quarterbacks on the Giants.

A Giants insider stated that 'Surprisingly, Haugen has impressed in offseason workouts, and him winning the starting quarterback job is not out of the question. In fact, a couple of people on the coaching staff suggested that he take over the starting quarterback role. However, Haugen himself is uncertain that the internal support will be enough to win the job. He feels he has a lot to prove, and if Owen beats him out again, then why bother sticking around. Owen still looks like one of the top quarterbacks in the league, despite him falling out of favor with ownership. It's going to be tough to unseat him for sure. Even though Marsh is at least a couple of seasons away from even thinking about starting, the fact that he was drafted certainly heated up the competition in training camp. Both Haugen and Owen are afraid of losing their spot.'

Even though the Giants accommodated the request from the quarterback duo, and shopped them during GM offseason meetings, they have received no interest from the rest of the league as far as they go.

'Haugen hasn't started in awhile and GMs feel that he's rusty. Owen has developed a bit of a bad reputation as a guy that can't get the job done when it counts, plus the franchise player salary is tough to move. Still, either quarterback can make a difference for a contending team looking for a strong arm behind center, especially since both can benefit from a change of scenery. Both guys have the leadership qualities to lead a team.' the Giants insider said.
