Playoffs 2117 (Tempe, AZ) - The Sports Writers Association announced their 2116 Regular Season Awards last night at a gala event.

Kansas City Chiefs’ QB Mike Strong was given the Tim Arkwright Rookie of the Year Award after completing 290 of 481 passes for 3,159yds, 16 TD’s and 7 INT’s to finish as the 5th rated passer at 84.7. Strong was the #3 overall selection in the 2116 Draft and was immediately named the starting QB and, according to some, the franchise savior. He received 6 of the possible 7 1st place votes, with runner up HB Keenan Harris of Philadelphia receiving the other. Strong took the opportunity to thank GM Steve Harrison for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime and vowed he wouldn’t retire until he brings another Sundby Cup to KC. Strong is the first QB to win ROY since Green Bay’s Virgil Chun in 2107.

Baltimore Ravens’ RB Roman Simms was named the 2116 Bing Bennett MVP Award winner, beating out teammate QB Donnell Belfatto by a single point. In fact, six players received 1st place votes, which made it the closest race since the 2088 season when five players received 1st place votes (eventually won by Kansas City QB Kyle Bennington). Simms helped lead the Ravens to their 2nd consecutive AFC East Division title after rushing for 1,677yds and 7 TD’s. This is the 2nd consecutive year Simms led the league in rushing.

Green Bay Packers’ GM Todd Ricotta was awarded the Jim Maurer GM of the Year Award after guiding his team to an NFC best 12-2 record and their first NFC West Division title since 2103. Ricotta gained league wide acclaim last season after becoming the first GM to win a Sundby Cup with the Spread Offense. His strategy of stockpiling draft picks every few years and building depth through trades and free agency is a winning formula. Although his teams are always among the league’s best, this is Ricotta’s first Maurer award since 2170. Ricotta wasn't able to accept his award, however, as he was busy scouting spring practices at Universities across the country.

Congratulations to all of the winners.
