Malloy: More Responsibility Required

Players, coaches still outraged weeks after NFC title game

Off-Season 2080 (Albany, NY) - New York Giants general manager Joe Malloy raised quite a few eyebrows around the league when he issued a press release stating that he was 'looking for our defense to stop laying down for teams in the bottom half of offensive stats'. The fallout is still being felt in the Giants locker room weeks after he made those comments, and now the New York Post has learned that Malloy and several coaches launched into a profanity-laced tirade at several Giants players following the NFC Championship game.

Malloy defended his comments, not as a shot at the Chicago Bears, who finished the season 18th overall on offense, but at his own team.

'The Bears came into that game looking to not just win the NFC Title game, but to win the Super Bowl. The Giants came into the game thinking it was a drunken game of flag football on a Saturday afternoon. It was embarassing, sad, and ugly to watch.' Malloy said in an interview with the Post. 'That's the difference between our organizations, the Bears are building a championship tradition. What are we doing? Building a tradition of doing well in the regular season, only to not show up in the postseason? Stats aren't the only thing that a team needs to win a championship, you've got to have the attitude to win. There are a few players that don't have the winning attitude in this organization. I got rid of one player that didn't have the winning attitude when we lost the Super Bowl. Maybe I need to get rid of a few more.'

One player Malloy is looking to shop is quarterback Tory Bush, who threw three interceptions in the game against the Bears. Also, there have been rumors that Malloy may be looking to trade two time rushing champion and former MVP Joe Porter.

'I don't care that Bush threw for 301 yards, he threw 3 picks, that's the important thing. Our defense, and this is where my comments come from, didn't put enough pressure on the Bears offense. Our defense has had a problem over the last four years taking advantage of favorable matchups in the playoffs, don't forget the Bears also beat us like this once a few years ago. The Patriots in the Super Bowl, and the Cowboys in 2078, they were able to strengthen their weaknesses to beat us. The teams that beat us played to their strengths too. We're just not getting solid play from all 53 players when it comes down to crunch time. I mean, look at Joe Porter, he's one of the best running backs in the league, a former MVP and a two time rushing champion. I can probably count how much yardage he gained on my left hand in the last four playoffs. A guy like him needs to step up and truly prove that he's one of the all time great running backs. A guy like Timm Reeser, he's our locker room leader, and he's a fine leader. Who's listening to him? He had 43 sacks last season and he's not getting the respect from his teammates on both sides of the ball? Who's kidding who? The players have to take responsibility in the end, and if I have to bring in new guys that I feel have the attitude to succeed, I'll do it.'

Several unnamed league officials point out that Malloy didn't have much in the way of expectations coming into the 2079 season, with the loss of a few key players.

'Yes, I expected no more than 8 wins, and my team exceeded them big time. Still, when you make the playoffs, no matter what, you need to win. Even if you lose, it needs to be 'gee, it's such a shame they lost since they played so well', instead of losing with such a poor effort.'
