A Tearful Goodbye

Long Time Panthers HB Jim Mason released in Carolina's final cuts

Off-Season 2155 (Charlotte) - The Carolina Panthers said goodbye to one of the most prolific rushers and best players in their long history Friday as the Carolina Panthers released former MVP HB Jim Mason among other veterans in their final cuts.

Even the usually tough-as-nails spokesperson for the Panthers had a tear in her eye.

'We say good bye today to one of the best players, and also one of the best people, in our organization's history,' team spokeswoman Kaori Sato said in the announcement, her eyes glistening. 'Mr. Mason has given us many exciting moments on the field over the last 12 years. Rather than just be sad to see him go, we would like to celebrate the success of his long career with us.'

Mason was not at the press conference as he and his agent worked the phones to find him a spot elsewhere where he could start. In the end, he wanted to be released rather than spend time behind new starter Al Benson after efforts to trade him to such a team had failed.

'I don't know what to say right now,' Mason said when reached by phone. 'I was hoping to play another year in Carolina and catch the great Rusty Mitchell on the all time rushing list, but I won't get the chance.'

Mason was offered a job as an assistant coach with the organization, but turned it down.

'I think I can still play,' he said.

TE Dale Rodgers, LB Michael Richardson, CB Oliver McKenzie, G John Scott, and WR Mike Reese were other veterans that were released as the club brought in eight rookies through the draft. As expected, P Nate Gunn was also released in favor of one of those rookies.

Carolina seems to be definitely getting younger with the release of those players. The question is, will it affect their efforts to get back to the Sundby?

A question which will be answered quite soon.
