McShay's 2190 Draft Preview - Updated

Sorry, no You Got Mel this year yet
By "Todd McShay"

Off-Season 2190 (The Great Beyond) - Hello, everyone! Todd McShay here, fresh off of discussing the physics of throwing a perfect spiral with Albert Einstein. Who knew he was a football fan? Last I saw Mel, he was discussing the LA Rams with Marilyn Monroe, so he may be a while. So in order to give you the real picture of the upcoming USAFL draft, I'm filling in.

This year's draft has some gems as well as some positions that leave us wanting. So without further ado, here's my top ten!

1. G Fred McCoy, Iowa. This is the best pulling guard we've seen come out for a long time. He needs to work on his strength and stay on the field a bit more, but if he's coached up well, he could be a franchise player.

Drafted 1st overall by Green Bay.

2. LB Wade Turner, Penn State. Wade was a solid inside backer at Linebacker U., where he led the Nittany Lions in tackles every year he started. He needs some work in the weight room, but he's smart, a good tackler, and a solid presence on a defense.

Drafted in 1st round by Buffalo.

3. LB Bobby Hill, The Ohio State University. Bobby blew up a lot of plays for the Buckeyes, where he was King of the Hill on their defense during his years there. Incredibly fast and durable, he can disrupt an opposing team's offense.

Drafted in 1st round by the New York football Giants.

4. DT Vince Wilkerson, Alabama. A bull rusher coming out of the SEC, Vince is quick and strong in the middle of the line. He needs to get out the the blocks a bit quicker and work on his diet, but he'll be a fine addition to someone's defense.

Drafted in the 1st round by Pittsburgh.

5. HB Tim Stanley, Auburn. Tim is a tough, smart runner with the ability to get around the corner and up the field. He needs some help learning to catch passes out of the backfield, but overall he's a great prospect.

Drafted in the 1st round by Minnesota.

6. FB AJ Fletcher, Stanford. This speedster can also catch the ball in a West Coast type offense and has enough power to run over people as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see him switched to halfback in the pros. AJ could step right in as a rookie and make some coach very happy with his skills. His only weakness is needing to learn to read defenses and hit the hole faster.

Drafted in the first round by Kansas City.

7. WR Bobby Moore, LSU. This speedster has one of the best set of hands we've seen in recent years coming out of college. A little undersized, but he makes up with that with his skill to stretch the field. If someone can talk him out of changing his name to Ahmad and hanging out with NBA players, he'll be fine.

Drafted in the 2nd round by Buffalo.

8. S Darryl Vest, Miami (Fla.). Darryl is a solid defender who can get down the field and shadow a receiver as a corner, or get in the box and make the stop as a safety, so he was very versatile for the Hurricanes. He needs to lay off the cheeseburgers and stay on the field more, but he'll be a fine addition to a USAFL team.

Drafted in the 2nd round by Minnesota.

9. TE Lester Wilkerson, Oklahoma State. Lester has terrific speed and agility for a big man, and is stronger than most tight ends coming out of school. He does need work of his pass catching, though, but he's smart and looks like a solid prospect.

Drafted in the 3rd round by the New York football Giants.

10. QB Roosevelt Emery, Florida. Roosevelt, or Rosey as he is called, led the Gators to a national championship his junior year with his speed and cunning. Scouts say he needs to work on reading defenses and curb that nasty tendency to fumble at the end of a big run, but if the right coach gets a hold of him and he learns some passing game mechanics, he'll be great at the next level.

Drafted in the 2nd round by Minnesota (I'm seeing a trend here).

Well, there's my top ten for this year. Einstein wants to talk about his theory about some of his relatives, so I have to run. Maybe I'll be back again next year. You know how Mel and I always agree when it comes to the draft...
