Draft Night 2293 - A Big Trade and Mad Englishmen

The USAFL Annual Player Selection Meeting Goes To London

Off-Season 2293 (London) - Tea and crumpets, anyone?

The USAFL went international for the 2293 draft, with the GMs transporting to old London town. Surprisingly for this one, all the GMs showed up which thrilled the Commissioner to no end. He showed his pleasure by sending all the GMs a gift basket of fish and chips and Shepherd’s Pie at the hotel afterward.

The big news for this one was not the observation by Houston GM Patrick Sicher that London Bridge was not really falling down or the multiple attempts by Miami GM Mike Morton to make the guards at Buckingham Palace blink, but rather a big draft day trade that went down between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

After some discussions that involved Ray Lewis’ leftover talcum powder and Ron Jaworski’s old sweat socks at times over pints of Guinness, the two teams settled on a trade of Philadelphia’s #5 overall pick for Baltimore’s 1st and 2nd round pick, Minnesota’s 1st and Baltimore’s 2nd round picks next season, all contingent on who would be there at #18.

Philadelphia selected DT Adrian Arthur with the fifth overall pick and Baltimore GM Mark Thul was happy. The waiting dragged on as the first round continued. Finally, pick #18 came and C James Dyer was the pick as he was sitting there on the board. The trade was consummated and both teams were happy as Philadelphia GM Andrew Lewis had brought in quite a haul for the pick.

The draft had quite a haul of defensive linemen for all this season, so no one with a pick in the first round should feel left out. Every team was present to get the most value out of their draft picks which was quite the sight to behold.

Meanwhile, London was hosting the draft in an effort to get a USAFL franchise. Commissioner Lombardo encountered some mad Englishmen on the trip after informing the London officials attending that the league was not looking to expand or relocate franchises at this time.

Lord Sundby’s descendants, however, called for calm since these things take time and the crisis was adverted. It’s nice to have friends with English titles.
