USAFL Offensive Schemes

PPP FAQ

The USAFL Offensive Play Set is comprised of 6 offensive schemes (Heavy, I-Form, Pro Set, K-Gun, Spread and West Coast) falling in 3 tendency categories (run based, pass based and balanced). Each scheme is described in detail below.

NOTE: It is important for each GM to keep in mind that KEY STATISTICAL OUTCOMES for each Scheme as represented below are based on the USAFL's controlled test results and results will vary depending upon personnel and team-by-team match-ups.

The FBPRO simulation manages situations in which there are fewer players available on a team's roster at the position required by the play.

Plays with more TEs in the play than available TEs on the roster will result in FBPRO bringing in the next available WR to fill the position.

SUBSTITUTION LOGIC FOR ROSTERS with 1 TE:
2TE/2RB/1WR Formations: WR2 -> TE2
3TE/1RB/1WR Formations: WR2 -> TE2, WR3 -> TE3
3TE/2RB/0WR Formations: WR1 -> TE2, WR2 -> TE3

SUBSTITUTION LOGIC FOR ROSTERS with 2 TEs:
2TE/2RB/1WR Formations: NO CORRECTIVE SUBSTITUTION NECESSARY
3TE/1RB/1WR Formations: WR2 -> TE3
3TE/2RB/0WR Formations: WR1 -> TE3

OFFENSE SCHEME: HEAVY
PLAY CALLING TENDENCY: RUN ORIENTED

DESCRIPTION: The HEAVY scheme features a power running game utilizing both HB1 and FB1. The passing game tends to be oriented around play action with shorter, manageable routes designed to complement the running game.

As you could imagine, this scheme is heavily oriented towards the run with power run blocking being supported extensively by TEs, requiring strength. Additionally, the pass routes the TEs run are not as creative as those that WRs run in different sets.

The goal during testing and play selection was to ensure that this particular scheme performed better with a full compliment of TEs, as opposed to WRs. GMs running a HEAVY offensive scheme should keep this in mind when managing rosters during the offseason.
